Excellent example of the emergence of Humanianity. There is a strong tribalistic component of our basic animal nature that must be inhibited to experience and enact compassion for members of our species beyond our tribe (family, group, nation, etc.), and that inhibition must be motivated by our ethical sense, the motivation to do what one believes is the right thing to do because of one's belief that it is the right thing to do.
